Managing Services for a Server or Cluster

Management & Control Services (MCS) allows you to remotely start and stop services installed on an MCS server or on other MCS-managed servers. Services must be defined as being "manageable" by MCS in order to start or stop them using the following procedures.

You can start and stop services manually, or you can schedule services to start and stop automatically at predetermined times. Click the desired link below to view the corresponding procedure:

To manually start or stop a service
  1. In the MCS selection panel, point to MCS Functions and then click Server Management.

    The Server Management tree appears.

  2. In the Server Management tree, click Plus sign next to the name of the desired cluster, or double-click the cluster name, to expand the list of items.

  3. Do one of the following:
    To do this
    Do this
    Manage services for a cluster Click Service Control Manager.
    Manage services for a particular server Click Plus sign next to the name of the server on which the service is installed, or double-click the server name, to expand the list of items.

    Click Service Control Manager.

    The Service Control Manager property pages appear in the MCS management panel.

  4. On the Status page, do one of the following:
    To do this
    Do this
    Start one or more services Select one or more services from the list and then click Start.
    Stop one or more services Select one or more services from the list and then click Stop.
    Note To select multiple services, hold down the Ctrl key as you click each service. To select a contiguous group of services, click the first service, hold down the Shift key, and then click the last service.

  5. To view status information about a particular service, select the service from the list and then click Show Info to show a status message for the service.

    Status messages are defined by each service.

To schedule a service to start and stop automatically
  1. In the MCS selection panel, point to MCS Functions and then click Server Management.

    The Server Management tree appears.

  2. In the Server Management tree, click Plus sign next to the name of the desired cluster, or double-click the cluster name, to expand the list of items.

  3. Do one of the following:
    To do this
    Do this
    Manage services for a cluster Click Service Control Manager.
    Manage services for a particular server Click Plus sign next to the name of the server on which the service is installed, or double-click the server name, to expand the list of items.

    Click Service Control Manager.

    The Service Control Manager property pages appear in the MCS management panel.

  4. Click the Management tab.

  5. On the Management page, do one of the following:
    To do this
    Do this
    Schedule a new event Click Add, and then continue with the next step.
    Modify an existing event Click an event ID in the list, click Modify, and then continue with the next step.
    Delete an existing event Click an event ID in the list and then click Delete. You have completed the procedure.
    Note To view information about an existing recurring event, click the event ID and then click Details. This is applicable to recurring events only—one-time events have no details beyond those already displayed on the Management page.

  6. If you are adding or modifying an event, complete each of the wizard pages to schedule the event.

    For details on any of the options on the wizard pages, click Help in the upper-right corner of the page.

    When you finish defining a new schedule event, that event can appear as one or more items in the event list. A single event may include both a start time and a stop time, and may also include one or more services.
