- In the MCS left pane under Services, choose ID Management.
- Under ID Management, choose Configure IDs.
- In the MCS management pane, in the pool tree, select either All IDs or an existing pool type, right-click to display the shortcut menu, and choose New Pool.

The Pool Creation series of pages guides you through creating a new pool. The pages displayed in this series are different depending on the pool type you select.
- In the New Pool page, select a pool type from the drop-down list. For most pool types, type a name for your pool. Pool names cannot contain spaces.

If you are creating a User Name pool, you cannot type a pool name. The name is determined by the User Name you choose when you click Next. |

Create a pool of IDs based on information from your directory service. IDs for directory service pools exist only while allocated. They are generated on request and destroyed when released or reclaimed. |
| IP Address or DNS Name |
Assigning IDs to IP addresses or DNS names ensures that specific computers receive specific IDs, no matter who is using them. This can be an effective way to manage IDs without setting up an account for each user in the directory service.
If you use domains, you can access user names on other trusted domains or servers only if your user name and password on the server where MCS is installed matches a user name and password on the trusted domain or server that you want to access, or if the Guest account is enabled on that trusted domain or server. |
| Named Pool |
Assigning IDs to named pools makes IDs available on a first-come, first-served basis to all clients that use a particular configuration. Any user at any computer can open as many sessions as desired until all of the IDs assigned to the pool are in use.
You can still limit certain IDs to certain users by creating a number of different named pools. For example, you could create a different named pool for each department at your company (Accounting, Sales, etc.). |
| User Name |
Assigning IDs to user names ensures that specific users receive specific IDs, no matter which computer they use. With this approach, all users must provide a user name when accessing a viewer or printer applet.
The available user names are determined by the directory service used by MCS. |
- Specify inactivity and lease timeout values. For information about timeout values, see Reclaiming IDs.
Timeout values apply to all IDs in the pool. You can change the timeout values at any time but an allocated ID continues to use the previous values until it is released.
- Choose Next to add IDs to the pool now, or choose Finish to create the pool but not add IDs.

For all pool types except directory services pools, you can add IDs to the pool later by selecting the pool and choosing New ID from the shortcut menu. For directory services pools, IDs are automatically generated on request from information you supply when configuring the pool. |
