Disabling Field Translation for Specific Fields

By default, fields are translated from PC code pages to EBCDIC and back again when data is sent between the host and your client application. If you have a field that you do not want translated, you can specify that from the Task Builder.

Note You can turn off field translation only for a field that is type PIC X(n) in a COBOL copybook. If you choose to disable translation for a specific field, make sure that the value meets the criteria as follows:

PIC X(n)

where n = any alphanumeric character allowable from the character set of the computer.

When you are creating or editing a task definition, the wizard provides pages for modifying input and output field properties. In either case, select the field you don't want translated, and set the Translate Field property to "No." The table below describes the results of the possible settings.

                 Selection Result

Translate Input Translate Output
Yes Yes The field is translated before it is sent and when it is returned from the host.
Yes No The field is translated before it is sent, but not when it is returned from the host.
No Yes The field is not translated before it is sent, but is translated when it is returned from the host.
No No The field is not translated before it is sent, nor when it is returned from the host.
