Linking Tasks

All tasks must navigate either from their initial screen back to their initial screen, or use another task as a starting point. Creating parent tasks lets you join tasks together from designated task end points. A task can be a parent to multiple other tasks, and a task can have multiple parents.

You can add a parent task, edit a parent task, or remove a parent task from a task that contains multiple parents.

To add or remove parent tasks
  1. Select the Parent Tasks Value column in the Task Properties pane. The Edit Task Parents dialog box displays.

  2. The Edit Task Parents dialog box contains a list of all available task parents and their endpoints. There can be more than one endpoint for a parent task.
    To do this
    Do this
Add a task parent From the Available task parents list, select the task and endpoint you want to use as a task parent for the current task. Tasks can be listed more than once if they contain multiple endpoints.

Verify that the task parent is compatible with the current task. Is the task parent's endpoint the same screen as the screen referred to by the connected task's initial state?

Remove a task parent From the Current task parents list, select the task and its endpoint that you want to remove as a task parent. You cannot remove all task parents from a task. If you replace the parent task you want to remove with another parent task, the selected parent task can be removed.
Note Once a task has been given parents, it cannot be "orphaned" or stranded. This is true both when you create a task and when you run the task. While you can create a task without parents (one that navigates from its initial screen back to its initial screen), you cannot remove all task parents from a task.
  3. Choose OK.
