Configuring ID Pools

When you implement ID management in Management & Control Services (MCS), you create pools of host access IDs. There are several types of pools from which to choose. For custom applications developed using Synapta Services Builder for UTS/T27, you can assign IDs only to named pools.

You can also change some properties for previously created ID pools, including pool name and lease and inactivity timeout values. The changes you make affect all IDs in the pool, although allocated IDs will continue to use previous values until they are released.

To create a new pool
  1. In the MCS left pane under Services, click ID Management.

  2. Under ID Management, click Configure IDs.

  3. In the MCS right pane, in the pool tree, select either All IDs or an existing pool type, right-click to display the shortcut menu, and click New Pool.

    The Pool Creation series of pages guides you through creating a new pool. For detailed information about options on any of these pages, click Help.

  4. In the New Pool page, select a pool type from the drop-down list. For most pool types, type a name for your pool. Pool names cannot contain spaces.

    For Synapta Services Builder for UTS/T27, select Named Pool.

  5. Specify inactivity and lease timeout values. Timeout values apply to all IDs in the pool.
    Note If you use ID management with Synapta Services Builder, you must set the lease and inactivity timeouts to 0.

  6. Click Next to add IDs to the pool now, or click Finish to create the pool but not add IDs.

    You can add IDs to the pool later by selecting the pool and choosing New ID from the shortcut menu.

To rename a pool or change its timeout values
  • Select an existing pool from the tree, right-click to display the shortcut menu, and then click Pool Properties. You cannot rename a pool that contains allocated IDs.

    Renaming a pool is a convenient way to reassign IDs (for example, from one user to another, or one group of computers to another). If you rename a pool in MCS, you may need to make a corresponding change in your client configuration.

To delete a pool
  • Select an existing pool from the tree, right-click to display the shortcut menu, and then click Delete.

    You can delete a pool only if it contains no currently allocated IDs. When you delete a pool, all associated IDs are also deleted.

Note If you change or delete a user name by modifying the directory service, the corresponding change does not automatically occur in the ID pool. To assign IDs to the new user name, you must delete the original user name, and then create a new user name and assign IDs to that user name.
