Extend your host application by integrating data and methods from Web services. In this How-To, you'll add a weather reporting service to your application.

Using Presentation Designer, add an event to your custom application. For this How-To, we'll cover how to associate a Web service with a button control for activation and a text field for sending input and a text field for receiving output. Add an action to the button's click event that accesses an existing Web Service Definition Language (WSDL) file that describes the inputs and outputs provided by that Web service. Map data from your text field to the Web service's inputs, and map the Web service's outputs to another text field in your application.

Before You Start

This How-To assumes that you have installed Presentation Designer and have access to an MCS server that has Presentation Manager installed. You may have Presentation Builder Runtime Service installed on your MCS server or on another server. Start with your project open to a customized form in Presentation Designer. If you want help getting to that point, see How to Customize Individual Screens for more information on the basic steps required.

Following are the main steps you need to complete for this How-To:

  1. Add controls to your customized form to send input and receive output.

  2. Add an event with a Web Service action to your button control.

  3. Map field to send input to the Web service.

  4. Map field to display the Web Service output.
