Creating Event Notifications

You can define event notifications to automatically send an alert when specified criteria are met in the events system. For example, you can have MCS send an email message to let you know when an error or warning is logged for an MCS service.

A notification consists of a rule and one or more messages. The rule defines the event criteria that must be met before a message is sent. The message specifies the sender and receiver, the information to be sent, and the transport to use. The transport is the method used for sending the message.

Because notifications can contain more than one message, and the same message can be used by more than one notification, it may be most efficient to create and test messages, and configure your transport, before you create a notification. However, messages can also be created as part of the process when you create a notification.

To create an event notification
  1. In the MCS left pane under Services, click Events.

  2. Under Events, click Notifications.

  3. In the Notifications page, choose the Messages button.

  4. In the Message Configuration dialog box, create one or more new messages, and then click OK.

  5. In the Notifications page, choose the New button.

    The New Notification series of pages guides you through creating a notification.

  6. On the Options page, specify a notification name, optionally limit the frequency of notifications sent, and then click Next.

    Notification names cannot contain spaces.

  7. On the Rule Configuration page, define the criteria that must be met before a message is sent.

    Options you specify on all pages are added together to create the rule, which means that events are considered a match for this rule only if they match at least one of the selected products and one of the selected event types specified on the Basic page, and all of the criteria specified on the More Choices page.

    Options you specify on the More Choices page do not have to be an exact match for a value in the event log. For example, you could specify part of a user name or a word or words from the event message.

  8. On the Assign Messages page, select one or more existing messages and click Assign to assign them to this notification.

    If you need to create a new message, you can click Add on this page.

  9. Click Finish.
