Creating Customized Pre-cached Installation CDs or Network Shares

The pre-cached installation feature is constructed from a series of HTML pages that duplicates the installation pages of the Terminal Viewers. These pages may be distributed as is or may be modified to provide only the specific clients that the intended user needs. Administrators familiar with HTML should be able to tailor the included files to suit their custom installation needs, and then burn them to a custom CD, or copy them to a network share, for distribution.

Java Clients

The starting file for installing Java clients is cd_root\Default.html. So if you wanted to only distribute certain Java clients, you could set the CD's autorun to run this file, modify it to use your business colors and logo, and perhaps remove the links for any languages you don't need to distribute.

Or, perhaps you only want to distribute Java clients for one language. In the cd_root\client directory, you'll find localized client directories. For each localized client, the starting file for installing is DEFAULT.HTML. Pointing the CD's autorun to this file will streamline the install process for your end users (if they all only need one language).

ActiveX Clients

The expected audience for the following information is expected to have a thorough understanding of ActiveX Control registration.

The starting file for installing ActiveX clients is cd_root\AXVC\Default.html. So if you wanted to only distribute certain ActiveX clients, you could set the CD's autorun to run this file, modify it to use your business colors and logo, and perhaps remove the links for any languages you don't need to distribute.

Or, perhaps you only want to distribute ActiveX clients for one language. In the cd_root\AXVC\ directory, you'll find localized client directories. For each localized client, the starting file for installing is Default.html. Pointing the autorun to this file will streamline the install process for your end users (if they all only need one language). The way the Pre-cached CD is structured accounts for other options which are not supported for this release of EXTRA! You can further streamline your single-language installs by distributing just the cd_root\AXVC\language\Enterprise\ActiveX directory, and pointing your CD's autorun to the Default.html in that location.

For very specific pre-cached installs, since each installation page contains the logic necessary to install (or cache) the specified client, an administrator could select just the page that matches the client that they wish their users to install, along with the associated subdirectory, and package only those files onto a customized CD. For example, to install the ActiveX 3270 Enterprise viewer, and administrator could place AX3270.htm, AXFailure.htm, and AXSuccess.htm in the root of their CD image, and then copy the AXClient subdirectory to the CD image. The user is now able to install the client by merely double-clicking on AX3270.htm.
